Programs For Youth

SEL Program

This is a 10-week SEL curriculum for youth that is culturally adapted based on Merrell’s Strong Kids SEL program.

Merrell’s Strong Kids curriculum includes the following topics in a typically 10-lesson sequence: Understanding one’s own emotions; understanding others’ emotions; dealing with anger; identifying and avoiding thinking traps; dealing with interpersonal issues; managing stress; living positively; and setting goals. Each lesson is about 60-80 minutes and usually begins with a guided relaxation or meditative activity and concludes with a description of “homework” to be done before the next week.

Programs For Parents

Parent-Child Connect Program

This is a 10-week culturally responsive parent training program for Asian American parents, including a 4-week Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training.

Dr. Cixin Wang has developed Parent-Child Connect, an 6-week culturally responsive parent training program for Asian American parents using the Participatory Culture-Specific Consultation method. The intervention sought to teach Asian immigrant parents about child development, and evidence-based parenting practices (e.g., parent-child communication, emotion coaching, problem-solving, effective praise, active listening, moving beyond tiger parenting and shaming, and stress management) as well as to introduce parents to resources at school and discuss how to help Asian American youth and families to cope effectively with discrimination.

Workshop: How to be an emotional coach for children

This is a series of two-hour parent workshops developed by Dr. Cixin Wang related to Parent-Child Relationship and Psychological Growth.

How to manage your own emotions as a parent, and then help your children to accept and express their emotions in a reasonable way? As a parent, how to express your empathy, communicate effectively with your child, solve problems together, and reduce parent-child conflict? Parents will have opportunities to discuss in small groups and all the questions will be answered by Dr. Wang during the lectures.

Programs For Adults

YMHFA Program

This is an 8-hour standardized public education program designed to educate adults, who interface regularly with youth, on common mental health challenges and how to appropriately intervene.

YMHFA has shown to be effective in promoting mental health literacy, confidence in helping a young person, and intentions to provide first aid to youth with mental health struggles. Dr. Cixin Wang has culturally adapted YMHFA training for Asian American parents by adding one 2-hr session before the YMHFA to augment engagement with the curriculum and contextualizing the YMHFA curriculum content to ensure cultural sensitivity for Asian American participants.
